Debt Collection Agency for Web Hosts?

Hey,

Anyone knows any specialized debit collection agencies working for web hosts in the US and/or UK?

Debts are generally 200-1000 USD in size.

Short question, I know. But cant discuss a lot out here regarding this case.

finding clients

Hi guys, been a while since I've been here, but my client's needs have brought me back to the idea of offering hosting.

Clients need reliable yet affordable hosting. I plan to give it to them, but tar targeting strictly small business owners. But I need to make this a profitable venture for me in order to give it any amount of my time. I have done a few spreadsheets on projections for clients. I have set a goal of 20 new clients a month at around $20/mo average. Even this is not a large profit, but I am also offering other services to enhance their online presence.

My question is, what have you found to be a good source of decent clients. Do you do only word of mouth referrals or do you advertise locally and if so where.

Reseller plan offers.

looking for a vps and dedicated server reseller plan that would allow me to buy as i sell.please post your offers if that's allowed here, if not send me a message.

is there any way that i could hide the fact that these services are being offered by a reseller ? given the fact that if the customer traceroutes his vps or dedicated server he is going to see that the connection is leading to a domain/ip other than mine.

thanks in advance.

Accept payment in Indian Rupees?

Hi guys

I have had a few customers contact me regarding payment for services in a "non-major" currency such as Indian Rupees where the customers do not have credit cards.

Although I accept credit card payments via our bank's gateway as well as Paypal payments and direct deposits into our bank accounts in South Africa, Australia or the UK, none of these options cater for these clients' situation.

I have also looked at solutions such as e-gold but they also appear to cater only for the major currencies. I would prefer not to go through the trouble of setting up local bank accounts and understand that SWIFT transfers are fairly expensive.

Does anyone know of an easy and reasonably priced way to allow a client to pay in "non-major" currency (no credit card) and receive the USD/GBP/AUD/ZAR equivalent?

WHIR Networking Event - Toronto, January 29

We want to make sure everyone out there knows about the first of our upcoming series of WHIR networking events, particularly those of you in Toronto. First off, the registration link is right here. The first event takes place in just a few weeks in Toronto, Ontario on January 29, 2009. These events are going to be modestly sized, so we expect them to fill up fast. Register as soon as you can (right now, for instance) to make sure you have a spot at the event. Our plan with the events is to provide a venue in which you can do business, make contacts, learn about some of the colleagues operating in your local area and have a little fun while you’re at it. These events are financed by sponsors (in the case of the Toronto event, GigaPark), which means they are free to attend, and that food and drinks will also be free. The Toronto event will be held from 7:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. at Maro, a very nice spot in Liberty Village. Click here for more info on the venue and schedule, including a map. We hope to see you there. Make sure you sign up as soon as possible to reserve your spot. For info on future WHIR Networking Events, click here.

PCI Compliance on shared hosting servers

I am curious as to how other shared hosting providers are handling PCI compliance for their users. How do you show to your clients that your servers are safe and secure and meet PCI scanning compliance?

As I understand it, PCI compliance is actually two parts. There's a server scanning which checks for some exploits and a survey that each individual e-commerce client would have to fill out on their own. Is there PCI scanner (preferably a free one) that would certify our servers as being safe as far as server scanning goes and some type of certificate we can show to our e-commerce clients to prove to them that our servers are compliant?

The PCI scanner basically just checks for port usage, application versions, and a few common exploits. The scanner itself does not actually guard against self-imposed deficiencies that the e-commerce client might do. For example, if an e-commerce client stores customer credit card numbers in plain text on a MySQL database on the server - I know that should not be done, ever - the PCI scan cannot detect this, but this would be handled by the survey portion of PCI compliance where the user is expected to answer the questions honestly - and one of those questions is about storing credit card numbers.

I'm sure that all of our servers are safe and secure and would meet PCI compliance, after showing that our servers run CentOS and use backported patched binaries. But I cannot guarantee that all of our shared hosting users that run e-commerce sites follow good e-commerce management practices. For that reason, I am just wanting to be able to prove that our servers will pass a PCI scan.

Probably the best case, if an e-commerce client is running a large business on the web, they need to be on their own dedicated server, just because they then don't have to share any resources with any other users. Is that how other webhosting companies are handling PCI compliance?

I think a lot of e-commerce clients are using gateway systems to handle credit card transactions and in those cases do our servers even have to be PCI compliant? I really don't think we have any clients on our shared hosting servers that are storing credit card information on the server (I certainly hope not). But in either case, I thought it would be a good idea if we could get our servers to be certified for the PCI server scanning aspect of PCI.

Any thoughts?

Web Hosting Application Security Upgraded, at FireHost

Dallas, Texas - (The Hosting News) - Jauary 6, 2009 - Managed hosting provider and online backup company, FireHost, Inc., is making available an enterprise-level secure hosting solution, designed for SMBs, including best practices, policies, hardware and software.

Chris Drake, Founder of FireHost remarked, ''While we believe developers should secure their websites and applications as much as possible, it's not reality. That's why we made it our responsibility to inspect every kilobyte of traffic to and from our customers' sites and enforce policies as needed for our customers and their site visitors' protection.''

Within the last year, Internet security threats have completely changed their style. In the past, port vulnerabilities and services exposure were the biggest concerns. Firewalls solved those holes by simply blocking access to all unused ports. Now, the biggest vulnerability utilizes port 80 and 443. These ports can't be blocked as port 80 is required for non-SSL website traffic and port 443 is require for sites with SSL. Hackers are attacking websites from the website themselves and companies without application security are having theirs and their customers sensitive data stolen and sold on the black market.

In addition to data theft, the most common attack is SQL Injections. According to security vendor Sophos, 16,000 new websites are hit by the attacks every day. Wordpress, Joomla, Drupal, .NET, classic ASP, shopping carts, Community Server, PHPBB websites have all been hit with SQL Injections. FireHost's Blog (www.fireblog.com) has a video available to see the impact of a SQL Injection that affected BusinessWeek's website.

FireHost protects their customers from SQL Injections, Cross Site Scripting, Path Traversal, Bad User Agents, DOS attacks, and more. Customers receive automated reports for their protected websites and applications from all the allowed and blocked traffic. Application protection is available for both Managed Shared Hosting customers and Managed Dedicated Server customers.

FireHost also provides continuous website vulnerability monitoring from within the FireHost network ensuring the site is getting tested without protection. All vulnerability testing is done in a manner that's non-destructive to websites and databases.

Ken Richardson, Security Engineer at FireHost remarked. ''The only true way to test vulnerabilities is to attack the website from within the security zone. Doing this provides our clients the piece of mind that we're finding their websites' weaknesses.''

For qualified businesses who are concerned that their website is vulnerable, FireHost provides a Hacker Report for no charge.

FireHost, Inc. is based in Dallas, Texas and focuses on delivering enterprise quality fast and secure managed web hosting to SMBs. Specializing in website security and high traffic needs, FireHost's engineers ensure all customers are not only protected but that their website or web application is delivered as fast as possible.
